About – Special Olympics Isle of Man

40

Years and still going strong.

Opportunities for athletes

Founded in 1985, Special Olympics Isle of Man is proud to be part of the global Special Olympics movement, which spans over 170 countries and stands as the largest sporting organisation in the world.

Our mission is to provide year-round sports training and competition for children and adults with learning disabilities. Through the power of sport, we offer opportunities for athletes to improve their fitness, build skills, form friendships, and feel part of a supportive and inclusive community.

Inclusive Sport for All

Special Olympics Isle of Man welcomes individuals of all abilities. From those who simply enjoy participating to elite athletes competing on the world stage, we ensure everyone has a place to thrive. With competitions at local, national, and international levels, our athletes have endless opportunities to achieve their personal best and be celebrated for their efforts.

Fairness is central to our competitions. Using a process called divisioning, athletes are grouped by ability to ensure fair play and meaningful competition. Achievements are recognised at all levels, and progression to higher levels of competition is based on participation and commitment, not just results.

Competing on the World Stage

Our athletes represent the Isle of Man in both the Summer and Winter editions of the Special Olympics World Games, as well as sport-specific tournaments nationally and internationally. In 2023, the Berlin World Games welcomed over 7,500 athletes, making it the largest sporting event of the year.

Beyond Sport

While sporting excellence is at our heart, the benefits extend far beyond the field of play. Our athletes gain more than physical fitness, they build confidence, enjoy friendships, and experience the joy of being celebrated for their efforts. Being part of Special Olympics Isle of Man fosters a sense of belonging and promotes overall health and wellbeing.

Powered by the Community

As a registered charity, we rely on the generosity of the public and the success of fundraising events to deliver weekly training sessions and fund competition participation. Every coach, administrator, board member, and fundraiser is a dedicated volunteer, united by their commitment to the Special Olympics mission.

A proud part of the Isle of Man.

Special Olympics Isle of Man is a cornerstone of the Manx community. Our athletes are cherished members of the island, representing not only the Special Olympics movement but also the Isle of Man with pride. Their achievements and dedication continue to inspire us all.
